Important Note:
MRP applicants to bring one copy each of original documents (including first and second page of passport) with them.
If they would be unable to physically collect new MRP, they should bring a prepaid, self addressed, return envelope of courier service of their choice. It is recommended that express mail envelope is used as documents sent by ordinary/priority mail might be lost and Pakistan Consulate General in Chicago will not be responsible for any loss of passport/documents sent by mail.
MACHINE READABLE PASSPORT (MRP)
Important Notice:
1. The Government of Pakistan has stopped issuing handwritten passports. Nowadays only Machine-Readable Passports (MRP) are issued for five (5) and ten (10) years of validity. Valid Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC) or the National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistani (NICOP) in original is mandatory for issuance of MRP.
2. According to Directorate General of Immigration & Passports of Pakistan, following MRP Services are also available online at https://onlinemrp.dgip.gov.pk/
a. Renewal of existing MRP if it’s expiring within a period of twelve (12) months.
b. Reprint of existing valid MRP if it has been damaged or lost.
c. Partial modification for newly married female applicants in the existing MRP.
d. “NEW” MRP for newly born (up to two years of age) could be applied.
3. The above services and all remaining services related to MRP are available at the Consulate General of Pakistan, Chicago for applicants residing in its jurisdiction: Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Nebraska, Ohio, and North and South Dakota.
4. Physical presence is mandatory to apply for MRP at the Consulate General. Processing of MRP application includes recording of biometric data (finger print scanning), photographing, taking the applicant’s personal data and an interview for which personal attendance is mandatory at the Consulate General. Other important points include:
a) Passports are printed in Pakistan and received in the Consulate General through courier service.
b) Any Forms or Photographs are not required.
c) MRP cannot be issued or renewed by Mail and neither any representative can file such application on behalf of the applicant.
5. If the applicant is unable to fulfill the requirements for MRP, his/her case could be forwarded for National Status verification from Pakistan.

Requirements for MRP being applied for the First Time:
- First-time MRP can only be applied at the Consulate General except for newly born up to two years of age, whose applications could be filed online after acquiring NICOPs.
- MRP applicants must possess valid Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC) or National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistani (NICOP) issued by National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA).
- Applicants below 18 years should possess either NICOP or new CRC (Child Registration Certificate) bearing photo issued by NADRA.
- Proof of Legal Status in the United States. i.e US Passport/Green Card/ Work Authorization Card/Valid Visa including I-20 for students or I-797 or any other applicable document from US authorities.
- If there is a discrepancy between the information provided by the applicant and the data from NADRA, the applicant has to rectify the information first in the NICOP before applying for MRP.
- In the case of marital status change, NICOP/CNIC shall first be updated before proceeding for Passport processing.
- First MRP to Dual Nationals cannot be processed for printing without clearance from Pakistan except in case of US born individuals of less than 18 years of age.
Requirements for Renewal of MRP:
MRP applicants must possess valid Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC) or National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistani (NICOP) issued by National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA).
Applicants below 18 years should hold either NICOP or new CRC (Child Registration Certificate) bearing photo issued by NADRA.
Latest expired Machine-Readable Passport (MRP).
Proof of Legal Status in the United States. i.e US Passport/Green Card/ Work Authorization Card/Valid Visa including I-20 for students or I-797/ or any other applicable document from US authorities.
If there is a discrepancy between the information provided by the applicant and the data from NADRA, the applicant has to rectify the information first in the NICOP before applying for MRP.
In the case of marital status change, NICOP/CNIC shall first be updated before proceeding for Passport processing.
Requirements for MRP in case of Lost MRP:
- MRP applicants must possess valid Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC) or National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistani (NICOP) issued by National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA).
- Applicants below 18 years should hold either NICOP or new CRC (Child Registration Certificate) bearing photo issued by NADRA.
- Lost passport copy (If available).
- Police Report of lost MRP.
- Proof of Legal Status in the United States. i.e US Passport/Green Card/ Work Authorization Card/Valid Visa including I-20 for students or I-797/ or any other applicable document from US authorities.
- If there is a discrepancy between the information provided by the applicant and the data from NADRA database, the applicant has to rectify the information first in the NICOP before applying for MRP.
- In the case of marital status change, NICOP/CNIC shall first be updated before proceeding for Passport processing.
Requirements for Renewal of Passport in case of Lost Manual
Passport:
- MRP applicants must possess valid Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC) or National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistani (NICOP) issued by National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA).
- Applicants below 18 years should hold either NICOP or new CRC (Child Registration Certificate) bearing photo issued by NADRA.
- Copy of lost Manual Passport. Police report of lost Manual Passport.
- Proof of Legal Status in the United States. i.e US Passport/Green Card/ Work Authorization Card/Valid Visa including I-20 for students or I-797/ or any other applicable document from US authorities.
- If there is a discrepancy between the information provided by the applicant and the data from NADRA, the applicant has to rectify the information first in the NICOP before applying for MRP.
- In the case of marital status change, NICOP/CNIC shall first be updated before proceeding for Passport processing.
- Applications for renewal of passport (MRP) in case of lost passport are processed after verification of particulars by the manual passport issuing authority.

Third Time Loss: The Consulate General cannot issue new MRP in case of third time loss of passport without approval from Directorate General of Immigration & Passports Islamabad, Pakistan.
General Pointers/FAQs:
- Make an appointment by clicking here from website of the Consulate General.
- Valid and original either Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC) or National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis (NICOP) issued by NADRA with a photocopy of the front and back sides of the card are required for any MRP services.
- For applicants below 18 years of age, NICOP or new CRC (Computerized Registration Certificate) bearing photo along with two copies of these documents are required.
- Original and latest passport either MRP or Manual (valid or expired) with photocopies of the first four pages is required.
- Proof of legal status in the US (US Passport/ Green Card/Work Authorization Card/Valid Visa including I-20 for students or I-797 or any other applicable document from US authorities) is needed. In case of Asylum/Refugee status, clearance is required from Pakistan in case of MRP being processed for the first time or if the earlier MRP was issued without clearance.
- Proof of residence in the US (Copy of State ID/Driver’s License) to be presented.
- For Dual Nationality Holders: Two copies of the original and valid foreign passport are needed. Clearance is also required from Pakistan in case of MRP being processed for the first time or if the earlier MRP was issued without clearance. Clearance may not be required for applicants under the age of 18.
- NOC in case of Government Servant from concerned department is mandatory.
- Married females should have updated marital status on their CNIC/NICOP before applying for MRP.
- If only Year (for example 1965) of Date of birth is mentioned in CNIC/NICOP, it will appear in MRP as 1/1/1965.
- For applicants below 18 years of age, original NADRA ID Card along with photocopies (front and back) of both the parents are needed.
- Fee to be deposited at counter through credit/debit card.
- The delivery of Passport can be delayed from prescribed time as passports are printed and dispatched from Pakistan.
- If you have received instructions from the Consulate General either through email or phone to pick your MRP, passports are available for pickup by the applicant between 9:30 AM-3:30 PM along with the receipt bearing the token number and an identification card.
- Otherwise, a self-addressed prepaid return envelope of your preferred courier service with a tracking number (the applicant’s responsibility) is required for delivery through courier mail.
